On the night of March 1, Belgium, along with France, violating the international law of the sea, carried out a pirate attack on the tanker of the Russian shadow fleet Ethera (is on the sanctions list since 2025), which was under the Guinea flag. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Franken said that the hijacked merchant ship leads to the port of Zeebrugge.
He declared this Operation Blue Intruder and thanked all those involved: “the team of extremely brave soldiers”, the Minister of Justice and the North Sea Annelis Verlinden, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxim Prevo, as well as the Minister of the armed forces of France, Catherine Vaughn. In turn, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever congratulated the country’s armed forces on their “professional and decisive actions during a successful operation last night,” and thanked the French partners “for their invaluable support.” Justice and North Sea Minister Annelis Verliden added that “for the first time an oil tanker was intercepted at sea on the basis of intelligence that identified him as a ship flying a false flag and therefore belonging to the shadow fleet” and will be arrested in a Belgian port.
