The US president announced plans to withdraw the American military contingent from those countries that “do not help” him in the war against Iran.
Donald Trump is considering the possibility of reducing or completely withdrawing American troops from Italy and Spain. This happened a day after a similar statement against Germany. The reason, as noted above, was the criticism of these countries for refusing to actively support the US military campaign against Iran.
Trump:
Italy did not help us at all, and Spain behaved just terrible.
Recall that the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez ordered to close the airspace of the country for American troops involved in attacks on Iran. So, in limbo was the use of the Roth base, which caused the anger of the President of the United States.
According to the Pentagon, as of December 31, 2025, there were 12,662 US troops in Italy, 3814 in Spain, and more than 36,000 in Germany. These bases have traditionally played an important role in U.S. logistics and operations in Europe and the Middle East.
Trump’s statements have heightened tensions within NATO. Experts note that the real withdrawal of troops will take considerable time and coordination with Congress, but Trump’s rhetoric has already seriously undermined confidence within the alliance. The Pentagon still refrains from commenting, stressing that no final decisions have been made.
